Matter

Everything in the universe is made of matter. It is your job this year, to understand how it is measured, manipulated and categorized.

Matter is defined as anything that hass mass (g) and takes up space (volume (mL liq) & (cm3 solid)).

Anything that has mass also has gravity. Gravity is measured by its force acting on a mass. Weight then is a measure of Force! Weight is measured with units called Newtons. Force of gravity = mass(g) * Acceleration due to gravity (9.8m/s/s(Earth)) See worksheet for more info.

All matter also has inertia. Inertia is the resistance of an object to a change in its motion. See Video of similiar demos done in class. Must be able to write What Happened and why for each demo....as it relates to Inertia!!

We can describe matter in a variety of ways. A most general way to descibe matter would be to describe a substances physical and chemical properties.

There are 5 states of matter, solid liquid, gas, plasma, and the the Bose-Einstein Condensate(this last one is the newest). Any change of state is a physical change. We will talk of states and phase changes. Use the internet as your textbook...Start here!!
